The airport is named Dick Scobee Field in honor of Francis "Dick" Scobee, a native of Auburn and Washington who served as the commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger. His inspiring journey from local beginnings to NASA commander showcases the remarkable achievements in space exploration. Scobee tragically lost his life in the 1986 Challenger disaster.
